When Satan Attacks

It's so easy to get caught up in the mundane things of life, that oftentimes we don't pay attention to what is going on inside us and around us. We go to school or work every morning, just going through the motions of everyday life. We may not pay attention to what God is doing. We may not pay attention to the fact that Satan could be trying to attack us mentally, spiritually, or physically.

1 Peter 5:8 says, "Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour." When I was a child, this verse frightened me. However, this verse was not written to instill fear into others, but rather, to help people to be on the alert and ready for when Satan tries to attack.

Satan likes to use many different avenues to open you up to him. He likes getting into your mind and twisting your thoughts. He lies to you. He wants to distract you and keep you from fulfilling God's plan for your life. John 10:10 says, "The thief (Satan) comes only to steal and kill and destroy, but I (Jesus) have come so that they (you) may have life, and have it abundantly." Satan's goal is to kill you.

So what do you do when Satan attacks?

"Submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." -James 4:7. Here is a powerful scene of resisting the devil from the new movie 'War Room.' (Which, if you haven't seen, you should!)


Instead of fearing the devil and his evil schemes, we need to resist him and stand up to him by using the Word of God. We also need to be careful about the music we listen to, the books we read, and the movies we watch. We need to be careful of the thoughts that we are allowing into our minds. These things can open us up to Satan attacking us.

"Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things." -Philippians 4:8. If an evil thought comes to your mind, submit to God, and reject it.

"Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people." -Ephesians 6:10-18

Always be alert. Don't be afraid, but resist Satan and his evil schemes. Be strong in the Lord and put on the full armor of God! Pray!



P.S. We already know Satan loses the battle in the end, so why be afraid of him? (Read Revelation 20:7-10.)
