I'm Not Better

"Then his disciples began arguing about which of them was the greatest. But Jesus knew their thoughts, so he brought a little child to his side. Then he said to them, 'Anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me also welcomes my Father who sent me. Whoever is the least among you is the greatest.'" -Luke 9:46-48

Do you think you are better than others? Because you don't sin in the same way they do, do you think that somehow their sin is worse than yours? Do you find yourself judging others and thinking, "Well, at least I'm not like them."

Lately, God has been dealing with me about this subject. I am going to be completely honest and say that when I was homeschooled, I thought I was better than people who went to public school. (God told my mom to homeschool, but He tells each family differently.)

I thought I was better because I didn't watch R-rated movies. I thought I was better because I listened mainly to Christian music. Overall, I had it in my mind that I was better than others.

Boy, was I wrong.

The thing is, it wasn't that my parents told me things to make me think I was better than others. My siblings or my friends didn't. Somehow, somewhere along the way, I myself bought into the lie that I was more righteous.

God convicted me. When God convicts, it hurts. It feels like He is yanking and tugging on my heart. It's a painful, cleansing type of tugging. Kind of like when you clean a wound before bandaging it.

I am not better than anyone else. We are all equal. I like the line from a cover of "Everyday People" by Nicole C. Mullen that says, "I'm no better and neither are you. We're all the same whatever we do."

God does not love anyone more than the other. He loves us all the same. He loves the drunkards, the murderers, the thieves, the prostitutes...the same that He loves you and me. He loves everyone equally. I'm not saying that He doesn't hate the sin, but He still loves the person. He wants the best for His beautiful creation.

Lately, throughout the day, I hear a voice, saying, "I love you, Tamika." God has been constantly reminding me of His love for me. With it, though, I am constantly reminded of how He loves all of us. Not one person is better than the other. Romans 2:11 says, "God does not show favoritism." If God doesn't show favoritism, we shouldn't.

If you find yourself thinking of yourself as better or more righteous than others, repent and ask God to forgive you. If we only continue thinking of ourselves as better, we will not be able to finish the work God has for us. We will also stumble and fall if we are prideful and act like Pharisees. It is only when we humble ourselves will we be able to fully help others and lead them to Christ.

So how are you going to act...better than other sinners or a humbled sinner who believes that God loves everyone no matter what?
